Don't waste your time on a trip to a public library, pool or recreation center in Dallas today. All recreational facilities and city offices, including city hall, are closed as part of the first of two furlough days for city employees to help close a big budget gap.
Dallas resident Carmen Ortiz says the shutdown is a big inconvenience for her, because she relies on the computers at the public library to use the Internet. "I've got four children I've got to support. I'm looking for a job," Ortiz said.
There will be another furlough day on September 4th. Between the two days, the city says it will save about 2 and-a-half million dollars. Garbage pickup, police and fire services are not impacted by the furlough. All city offices, pools, recreation centers and libraries will re-open July 7th.
