According to reports in the Wall Street Journal, oficials investigating the multi-state salmonella outbreak now are looking at jalapeño peppers as a leading suspect. Hundreds reportedly have been sickened across the U.S. over the past three months. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initially blamed tomatoes, but its attention has now turned to other foods commonly eaten with tomatoes. In particular, other ingredients used to make salsa. The CDC says many of the sufferers ate jalapeno peppers or salsa containing jalapenos in addition to tomatoes. Health officials say the evidence linking jalapeños to the disease is compelling, but they are erring on the side of caution before making a public warning. Besides jalapeño peppers, officials are looking at cilantro and Serrano peppers. |
