Thieves are now targeting not what is in your car, but instead, what is underneath specifically the catalytic converter.
The catalytic converters are a gold mine for thieves because of the platinum and other high-priced metals they contain. There have been nearly a dozen catalytic converter thefts in Dallas this month alone.
Police Chief David Kunkle tells 1080-KRLD this is a trend that started on the west coast. He says the higher profile vehicles such as trucks and SUV's are the number 1 target because it is easier for the thieves to get underneath the vehicle. And it can only take a couple minutes for the thief to cut the catalytic converter out with a hacksaw.
Dallas police are working with metal scrap yards because this is such a tough crime to prevent.
