It took a Tarrant County jury two days to convict a 65 year old Haslet woman of burning her 2 year old great-granddaughter with a curling iron in July 2008. However, it took that same jury only ten minutes Friday to sentence Saundra Patterson to five years’ probation. It could have given her a maximum sentence of life in prison. During her trial Patterson claimed the girl burned herself on a hot curling iron she took from Patterson’s bathroom. Medical personnel, however, testified that the girl had first and second degree burns over at least 10 percent of her body, from her head to her feet. As part of her probation, Patterson cannot have contact with children younger than 17.
