It’s Another Bad Month for Sales Taxes

While experts are saying we are coming out of the recession sales tax revenues haven’t caught up yet.  October sees another double digit decline in sales tax revenues compared to October of last year.  The drop was 12.8 percent.  Comptroller’s Spokesman RJ DeSilva says that’s due to things like lower housing starts and retail sluggishness.  He says it would be nice if the holiday shopping season started a turn around but we’re not counting on it. “A spike would certainly be welcome but in terms of what we expect, we expect declines to continue for the rest of this year.”  DeSilva says the Comptroller’s office expects the declines to continue for the first part of next year too before a turnaround.
