A Keller man is petitioning to have the city's animal shelter shut down. He claims the facility is ill-equipped to handle all the strays being brought in and that the city simply can't afford to care for the animals. Larry Erdman, who is the driving force behind the petition, says the city can save money and pets by shipping them to the shelter at neighboring North Richland Hills.
Lieutenant Brenda Slovak agrees that the Keller Animal Shelter is a little cramped but says closing the shelter and outsourcing services isn't a practical solution.
The petition, which is circulating through the city, seeks better services for the animals. So far, more than 500 people have signed it. The shelter is reportedly in good standing with the state and the city is in need of its services. The city council is set to address the issue tonight.
