Tentative approval is given to new graduation requirements but some State Board of Education members still have some questions. The sticking point now deals with the elimination of the Integrated Physics and Chemistry class counting for a science credit towards graduation. Board Member Don McLeroy favors getting rid of it because he doesn’t think it’s challenging enough. “We need to give our kids the opportunity, we need to look at them this way, as self governing creatures of God that can respond to the challenge.” But other board members like Bob Craig favor keeping the course. “This benefits a lot of students, a tremendous amount of students, and they have been successful whether they’ve gone on to college or elsewhere by taking this program.” The compromise was to take a preliminary vote to phase out the court but also to survey school district’s and teachers to see if that’s the right thing to do before a final vote is taken early next year.
