PET OF THE WEEK
Rotini is a 1½-year-old lynx-point Siamese-Tabby mix with huge blue eyes and white paws. He's incredibly friendly, gentle and very affectionate-he'd rather be petted than just about anything else. Rotini is so sweet that it's hard to believe that someone left him in the overnight cage at the shelter on Valentine's Day. Rotini deserves a loving home, and you can adopt this handsome guy-or another great cat or dog-at the Dallas Animal Services Adoption Center, just minutes west of downtown Dallas at 1818 N. FUN FACT
You may have heard that many white cats with blue eyes are born deaf. Researchers have found that about 40 percent of white cats with one blue eye are deaf, while 65 to 85 percent of all-white cats with both eyes blue are deaf. Interestingly, some of these cats are deaf in only one ear, and if a white cat with one blue eye is deaf in only one ear, invariably that ear will be on the same side of the head as the blue eye.
HELPFUL HINT
You could have a cat who's deaf in one ear and never know it. They usually act perfectly normal, and cats seem to have selective hearing anyway. Even cats that are totally deaf from birth can live long, happy lives and make great companions. You'll just need to take precautions to keep them out of situations where their safety depends upon their ability to pick up auditory cues. And make sure they never go outside where they can be harmed by threats they can't hear, like dogs and cars.
