PET OF THE WEEK
Maya is a gorgeous medium-haired Lynx Point Siamese-Tabby mix. She's 2 years old and has been declawed. Maya is one of the most loving, laidback cats you'll ever meet. She's friendly, gentle, calm and quiet, and she's good with other cats. You can adopt the marvelous Maya-or another great cat or dog-at the Dallas Animal Services Adoption Center, just minutes west of downtown Dallas at 1818 N. Westmoreland and I-30. Give them a call at 214-671-0249.
FUN FACT
Next time you're at a cocktail party, amaze your friends with these fascinating facts about felines:
* In addition to using their noses, cats can smell with the Jacobson's organ, which is located in the upper surface of the mouth.
* In relation to their body size, cats have the largest eyes of any mammal.
* Cats have about 100 different vocalization sounds. By comparison, dogs have about 10.
HELPFUL HINTS
If you're thinking about adding a feline friend to your family and planning to get her declawed, consider adopting a shelter cat who's already been declawed. The procedure is a painful surgery that removes the last joint in a cat's foot, to which the nail is attached. Declawing should be done as a last resort if you're unable to keep your kitty from scratching the furniture and only on the front paws-never the back feet. But if you adopt a cat who's already been declawed, you'll save your kitty from a painful experience and save yourself a lot of money.
